Yea, am done with HUMA

Yea, am more or less done with Huma (and Hume), finished writing my paper already. Now its just going to visit Harper tutors, check with my prof that the argument is valid, then should be clear to hand it up. Am quite proud of my paper actually, very pleased with the way it turned out. Analyzed a paragraph of (David) Hume's work, and then argued that there is possibly no such thing as knowledge. Oh, just have to add more filler to this paper. Talked to someone about it, comment was that this appears so similar to a mathemathical proof, instead of a Huma paper. I need to flesh out the details and ideas more. Besides, i haven't hit the page limit of 6-7 yet... Hmz, this one took me 8+8+8 hours to write, not all that bad, considering that my very first 4 pg huma paper took 40 hrs LOL

Now have to start work on my Music paper. Have to collect musical samples over a 24 hr period and indicate what relation they have in terms of the topics that we have dealth with. To that extent, i have (illegally) procurred a video of the closing dance sequence, amongst other stuff, and would be attempting to make an analysis of that. Methinks i have learnt how to crap my way thru music, he gave me a A- for my concert review paper (I hear TK go WTF), and the only marks i lost on test were those requiring memorization, which was still quite a bit LOL. Yea, hopefully can crap my way out of this essay, which needs 8-10 pages.

Oh yea, am supposed to advertise Beauty World to all my wonderful readers, but guess what, me dunno how to use said features. So, you just have to take my word of it. Hei, if it wasn't good enough, would the grade-greedy me use it for my music paper (erm ... i'm desperate too LOL). Heres the website, http://www.citylightschicago.com/ , had a laugh at the write-ups posted.

Yea, have amazingly lost that train of thought from yesterday, sleep was quite bad since brain was working overtime. Strangly, din sleep much this afternoon or evening, but my brain seems to be functioning well still. Have to be careful about sleep debt though, dun want it to catch up with e during hon anal exam. Hopefully i'm getting back my ability to work on fewer hours of sleep - army was responsible for making me reliant on 10 hrs of sleep a day. TK survives on amazingly little, also cos he was a responsible DYDYS3, instead of a chao keng man.

Onto the topic for today, which is related to my huma paper. I got irritated with Physics in JC cos of the way they were 'proving' stuff - via approximations, estimations and such. Din really like the iffiness of situations, where things look like right angles from near infinity and such. Can't say i hated it, just that it put me off.

Got hooked onto econs as i realised how interesting the theory can be. Change an assumption and you might get a whole new concept. Add a rule and things go ballistic. Having loads of fun with econs here too (well, or so i would like to think)

I guess this is where my love for math and econs distinguish from my 'hate' for physics. It is fun to change the basic assumptions and see what you get, like in Geometry, or Oligopoly models. But for physics, u're pretty much stuck with whatever lousy model u're given.

How does all this relate together? My huma paper was on how Hume says we can't prove by past experience (aka physics) . I went on to argue that systems based on axioms also shdn't be taken as truths, as there are logically consistent models with conflicting axiomatic systems (Euclidean geometry vs non-Euclidean, set theory with and without axiom of choice) Just as we are unable to prove the axioms, and have no idea if they are true, we might just as well make some physics law an axiom and have the theory established. But hei, i argued to myself that theres no fundamental difference between working with axioms (math) and with nature's laws (physics). They both require faith/belief.

So, if essentially there is no difference between the systems of math, econ and physics, is my dislike purely irrational? If so, cool! Thats not the only irrational thing about me :) Shall have to one day, internalize this irrationality and re-examine it.

yea, its time to sleep now. Later have to suck up to my music prof to get some kind of direction for my paper. He accused me of being tentative and not having a thesis statement. 'Do not worry if you do not have the analytical skill of a music professor.' LOL, i've been complaining to him this quarter that i have no f-ing idea abt music.

ugh, unable to get my mind off putnam ... when are results coming out?? Lucky im busy with work man ...

  • Results for putnam come out in early April.

Physics is not like maths lah... it's exciting coming up with different models and seeing how closely they model reality - especially the more unintuitive quantum mechanical phenomena. You're not "stuck" with a model what - you just have to know when to use what.
