REU presents...

Man, this week has been so so busy. Classes from 9-5, and they are going to up the tempo soon. I'm falling asleep in all my classes cos im tired out, so would sleep to catch a nap, and then be refreshed to think once again. Brain seems to be in overclocking, need to install heat sink. But its been great fun so far, and promises to get better. Cooked jap curry yesterday, mmmm. We cooked 3 cups of rice (for like 3+) pple intending to keep for lunch, kenneth and I just gobbled up everything :) In fact, can still feel lunch sitting in me right now.


So, this is what research in math and bio at cornell has produced : Women are not nice

Women, largely defined by their menstrual cycle, have ben shown by mathemathicians and biologists to be not nice.
Biologists know that whenever you place 2 women in long term, close contact with each other, they will synchronize their menstrual cycles to each other. Since the menstrual cycle is cyclical with period approximately 29 days, we can consider it modulo 29, hence is expressable on a circle (just think of it looping and looping). Hence, we ask of mathemathicians if the following function exists.

f: T \times T \mapsto T [T stands for the circle]
f(x_1, x_2) = x_3 where x_1 = menstrual cycle of first women, x_2 = menstrual cycle of second woman, x_3 = menstrual cycle synchronized to.

We also expect conditions like
f(x,x)=x (No need to shift if they are the same)
f(x,y)=f(y,x) (Women do not know whos the first specimen)

Assuming that this function f is continuous
Consider the characteristic function g: Z \times Z \mapsto \Z [Z stands for the integers]
What we now get is
1 = g(1,1) = g(0,1)+g(1,0)=g(1,0)+g(1,0) = 2 g(1,0).
However, we now have that 1 is twice an integer. Hence contradiction. Thus, such a function f cannot be continuous.

Thus, the menstrual cycle is not a continuous map, and as anyone will tell you, a discontinuous function is not nice. Thus, women, defined by their menstrual cycle, are not nice. QED

  • This reminds me of, say, the jordan curve theorem and some others - complicated math that proves something inherently obvious.
